GreenLight Initiative attends 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) on climate change – Advocates for healthier, safe, and sustainable Mobility.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) continued to gather member countries annually to establish ambition, responsibilities, and evaluate climate measures. This year’s session, the COP28, is being hosted by the government of the United Arab Emirates in Dubai from 30th November – 12 December 2023.

GreenLight Initiative (GLI) is participating in the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) which began on the 30th November in Dubai. As transportation remains the largest contributor to CO2 emissions globally, GreenLight Initiative is urging the Nigerian government to prioritize green and sustainable mobility solutions which is a game changer for climate.

Transportation accounts for around one-fifth of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (24% of global carbon dioxide emissions) constituting a pressing challenge in the fight against climate change. Unfortunately, the road transport sector is responsible for about 15% of the total CO2 emissions from transportation worldwide. This alarming figure underscores the urgency for transformative measures to address emissions from vehicles and enhance sustainable transportation systems.

GLI’s participation at COP28 reflects its commitment to advocating for environmentally friendly transportation policies and practices. The organization will actively engage with stakeholders, policymakers, and experts to emphasize the importance of prioritizing healthier, greener and sustainable mobility solutions.

GLI is calling on the Nigerian government to prioritize and invest in initiatives that promote sustainable transportation, adopt policies that encourage the use of electric vehicles, public transportation, and cycling thereby contributing to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions from the transportation sector.

According to Simon Patrick Obi, the GreenLight Initiative representative; “It’s an honor to be attending COP28 in Dubai and contributing as a guest panelist in four sessions.  As a current public health student from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a devoted road safety advocate, I believe that the inclusion of Health Day, for the first time in COP, marks a significant achievement for public health; safe and sustainable mobility; and indeed, a broader battle against climate crises. Together, the world is advancing crucial discussions at the intersection of climate action, public health, and well-being.”

GreenLight Initiative is committed to promoting safe and sustainable mobility as well as climate action. Through advocacy, research awareness campaigns, and collaborative initiatives, GreenLight strives to inspire positive changes in policies and behaviors to create a more sustainable future.
