GreenLight Initiative Launches Road Safety Advocacy Project to Enhance Pedestrian Safety in Abuja’s High-Risk Zones

GreenLight Initiative is pleased to announce its latest road safety advocacy project, supported by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. The project focuses on enhancing pedestrian safety and reducing traffic-related incidents in Abuja, particularly around the Utako Market area, Abuja FCT.

In May 2024, during the #CommitToAct campaign week, GreenLight Initiative conducted a comprehensive Mobility Snapshot at Utako Market in Abuja, FCT. Data was collected at a specific intersection to analyze how many people were using it and whether life-saving road safety interventions were in place to protect them. The findings revealed that 1,488 people navigated this busy intersection during peak hours.

This effort revealed significant road safety challenges, including high vehicle speeds and inadequate pedestrian facilities, which pose serious risks to road users.

To address these issues, GreenLight Initiative will implement targeted advocacy activities from August to November 2024.

The primary advocacy goals of this project are to implement a 30 km/h speed limit in high-risk zones around Utako Market and to improve pedestrian facilities, such as marked crosswalks and dedicated walkways. These measures are expected to significantly reduce traffic collisions and create a safer environment for all road users.

Stephen Adebayo, the Programs and Grant Officer for GreenLight Initiative, expressed optimism about the project, stating, “The data collected from our Mobility Snapshot provides compelling evidence for the need to improve road safety in Utako Market. We are committed to working with the relevant authorities like the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the community to implement these critical interventions.”

GreenLight Initiative is a leading non-profit organization committed to advancing good health, safety, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
