On September 26, 2024, GreenLight Initiative, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and with support from the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety, hosted a Capacity Training Workshop focused on road safety for women in Abuja. The event took place at The Novare, located on the 2nd Floor of the ShopRite Building in Wuse Zone 5, and brought together women from diverse sectors across the Federal Capital Territory.

This workshop is a vital part of GreenLight’s Local Action project, which aims to foster a safer and more inclusive environment for female road users in Abuja. The training was designed to provide women with essential skills, including road safety strategies, mental wellness practices, and self-defense techniques, empowering them to navigate the transportation system safely and with confidence.

Star Okereh, the Project Lead, stated, “The objectives of this training program are straightforward: we aim to equip women with the knowledge and skills necessary for safe navigation of the transport system, instill confidence in their use of public transportation, and mobilize them to advocate for improved policies regarding mobility and safety.”

The workshop covered a range of topics, including personal safety strategies, the rights of women in public transport, and effective advocacy techniques for promoting safer transportation policies. Participants engaged in interactive discussions facilitated by experts in road safety and gender inclusivity, creating a dynamic environment for sharing experiences and insights.

Stephen Adebayo, Programs and Grants Officer at GreenLight Initiative, underscored the significance of this initiative, stating, “Women in Abuja face unique mobility challenges. Our goal is to equip them with the tools and knowledge necessary for safe and confident travel. By empowering women, we also contribute to a safer and more inclusive transport system for everyone.”

GreenLight Initiative is a dedicated non-profit organization focused on promoting road safety and inclusive mobility. Through comprehensive advocacy, educational programs, and community engagement, we strive to establish safer and more sustainable transport systems across Nigeria.
