Radio Program on 12 May 2023

As part of the activity to kick start the 7th edition of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week 2023, GreenLight Initiative had a radio episode on Radio Maria 91.3fm to discuss the theme for the week “Sustainable transport, the need for governments to facilitate a shift to walking, cycling and using public transport” together with her guest the Unit Commander, Central Business District, FRSC.

On Friday, 12th May 2023, the Executive Director of GreenLight Initiative interviewed with radio now Lagos to discuss the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week theme and how to rethink mobility for sustainable transport in Nigeria.

GreenLight Initiative Engaged her volunteers in commemorating the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week 2023.

In a remarkable effort to commemorate the 7th edition of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week, a highly impactful volunteer hangout was held on May 14, 2023. The primary objective of this engaging event was to enlighten and educate volunteers about the significance of the week, highlighting the importance of road safety.

During the hangout, volunteers were actively encouraged to capture and share pictures on their social media platforms, magnifying the message and raising awareness among a broader audience by utilizing the power of social media.

Committing to promoting road safety, the volunteer hangout catalyzed change and inspired individuals to take proactive measures to ensure safer road practices.

Opening/ joint  press conference on 15th May 2023

GreenLight Initiative attended the opening/joint press conference by the Nigerian Government and road safety stakeholders on the 15th of May at the FRSC headquarters in Abuja. During the joint press conference, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dauda Ali Biu, outlined the activities planned for the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week.

The Corps Marshal emphasized the importance of sustainable transport for road safety. He highlighted several initiatives that will be undertaken during the week, which includes

  1. Engaging national partners and relevant stakeholders.
  2. Stakeholders workshop on Road Safety.

A team of five senior professionals from WHO, the press, top government officials, and different partners were also in attendance.

Round table discussion with the Central Business District Abuja Assistant Corps Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps FCT, on 15 May 2023.

As part of the programs for the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week, GreenLight Initiative had its first round table discussion with the Assistant Corps Commander of the Central Business District Abuja, Federal Road Safety Corps FCT, on 15 May 2023.

During the discussion, he committed to the following:

  1. Enforcement and the implementation of 30km\h and speed calming interventions.
  2. Promote walking, cycling, and public transport.

GreenLight also presented the maiden edition of the road safety award of Excellency to the Assistant commander for his outstanding public services performance and contributions to improving road safety within the Central Business District.

 

Round table discussion with the Secretary, Transport Secretariat Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on 16th May.

GreenLight Initiative made a significant and impactful visit to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) during the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week.

This visit marked a crucial collaboration with the FCTA, with a shared objective of implementing initiatives to significantly enhance sustainable transport and ensure the well-being of road users in Nigeria. Together, these esteemed partners are actively working towards creating safer streets, fostering sustainable transportation, and formulating policies promoting walking, cycling, and public transport.

The Transport Secretary committed to providing road infrastructures promoting walking, cycling, and public transport in Abuja.

Round table discussion with the Zonal Commanding Officer on 18th May

GreenLight Initiative visited the Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on May 18th, 2023. During the round table discussion, the Zonal Commanding Officer made a steadfast commitment to:

  1. Collaborate with the government and relevant stakeholders to establish the essential infrastructure to promote walking, cycling, and public transport.
  2. Ensure the implementation of effective speed-calming measures by taking all necessary actions, including enforcing 30 km/h in high risks areas.
  3. Conduct comprehensive road user education programs to enhance knowledge and compliance with road safety regulations.

The round table discussion with the FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer reinforces their commitment to road safety and amplifies their determination to create a lasting impact. By focusing on infrastructure development, speed-calming measures, and road user education, they aim to drive meaningful change, reduce road accidents, and safeguard the lives of all road users.  

 

Live Program with NTA International on 18th May.

The Executive Director of GreenLight Initiative, Simon Patrick Obi was live on NTA International to discuss the theme for the United Nations Global Road Safety Week.

Second Edition of the radio program for the  United Nations Road Safety Week on 19th May.

The Unit Commander of the FRSC Central Business District and the Head of Africa Safer Road Initiative joined the special edition for UNGRSW on the radio to discuss RethinkMobility and its importance to Nigerians.

The radio program was dedicated to enlightening and educating Nigerians on the importance of rethinking mobility. The program aimed to underscore the profound health benefits associated with sustainable transportation practices while highlighting the dire consequences posed by harmful emissions from vehicles, including the depletion of the ozone layer and threats to human lives. 

Stakeholders Meeting on Road Safety Capacity Building From 16 – 19 May

GreenLight Initiative attended the Stakeholders Meeting on Road Safety Capacity Building on the 2022 – 2030 UN Global Action Plan for Road Safety and Road Traffic Deaths Data Strengthening on 16 – 19 May 2023 at Bolton White Hotel, Garki, Abuja.
