Press Release: GreenLight Initiative Ghana Calls for Urgent Road Safety Reforms Following Recent Fatal Road Incidents
GreenLight Initiative Ghana expresses deep sadness following the recent tragic road incidents at Legon East, Obretema Atwedie, and Kwapia, which have claimed the lives of 30 citizens in just a few weeks. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective action to address road safety challenges and safeguard the lives of all Ghanaians.
Recent statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) reveal that, from January to September 2024, Ghana experienced 7,470 road traffic crashes that resulted in 1,405 fatalities and 8,560 injuries. This alarming trend underscores the critical need for immediate intervention from the government, road safety stakeholders, and the public to reverse this deadly course.
GLI Ghana strongly urges the following measures to prevent further tragedies and to foster safer roads nationwide:
- Strict Enforcement of Traffic Laws: Strengthening enforcement of existing traffic laws is essential to hold violators accountable and deter dangerous driving behaviors.
- Public Education Campaigns: Launching comprehensive campaigns to raise road safety awareness can educate the public on the risks of speeding, drunk driving, fatigue, and other unsafe driving practices.
- Road Infrastructure Development: Investing in road infrastructure improvements, such as better signage, pedestrian walkways, and traffic-calming measures, will help reduce crashes and enhance the driving experience.
- Encouraging Safe Driving Practices: Urging drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid driving while tired, and refrain from drunk driving will help prevent accidents and save lives.
- Promoting Considerate Driving: Encouraging all road users to exercise patience and respect on the road fosters a safer, more cooperative driving environment.
The fight against road accidents requires a united effort from every sector of society. GreenLight Initiative Ghana believes that, with commitment and action from all stakeholders, we can dramatically reduce the rate of road crashes in our country. The safety of our roads is a shared responsibility, and together we can make them safer for everyone.
