PRESS RELEASE: GreenLight Initiative Joins Global Call to #MakeWalkingSafe and #MakeCyclingSafe

The United Nations Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) kicks off today, May 12, and runs through May 18, 2025. This biennial campaign, now in its 8th edition, centers on the theme “Streets for Life” with a global call to action under the hashtags #MakeWalkingSafe and #MakeCyclingSafe. It highlights the urgent need to protect vulnerable road users and promote safer, healthier, and more sustainable transport systems.
The week provides a vital platform to rally action at both global and national levels, promoting concrete steps to protect vulnerable road users—especially pedestrians and cyclists. It urges all sectors of society—from policymakers to community leaders—to take practical steps that make walking and cycling safer and more accessible. These efforts contribute significantly to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to health, climate action, and inclusive urban development.
As part of its commitment to safer roads and sustainable mobility, GreenLight Initiative, with support from the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, is launching a coordinated campaign in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Activities include school-based road safety awareness sessions, advocacy campaigns promoting the implementation of a 30 km/h speed limit in high-risk pedestrian zones, and strategic use of Mobility Snapshot data to engage government decision-makers with evidence-based recommendations. The organization will also continue its outreach through media engagements and awareness.
GreenLight Initiative calls on government institutions, civil society, and transport stakeholders to prioritize people-centered street designs and invest in safer infrastructure for walking and cycling.
Now is the time to act. We must build streets that protect lives, encourage active mobility, and support a healthier future for all.
