GreenLight Initiative expresses deep sorrow over the tragic road traffic crash that occurred on Sunday, 11 January 2026, at Gada Biyu along the Yangoji–Abuja corridor, which claimed the lives of twelve (12) persons, including adults and children.

The fatal crash, confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), involved multiple vehicles and has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of speed violations and dangerous driving, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles on high-risk corridors.

GreenLight Initiative extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes those injured a full and speedy recovery.

The Federal Road Safety Corps is commended for its swift and coordinated emergency response. Official reports indicate that FRSC operatives received the distress call at 11:47hrs and arrived at the crash scene by 11:54hrs, recording a response time of seven (7) minutes. Injured victims were promptly evacuated to Abaji General Hospital, while traffic control measures were immediately put in place to prevent secondary crashes along the busy corridor.

While acknowledging the efforts of first responders, the incident serves as a painful reminder that road traffic crashes are largely preventable. Strict compliance with speed limits, responsible driving behaviour, and sustained enforcement especially for commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators remain critical to saving lives.

We further call on relevant authorities and stakeholders to:

● Strengthen speed management and enforcement on the Yangoji–Abuja corridor and other identified high-risk routes;

● Promote safer driving practices through sustained public education and awareness;

● Prioritize evidence-based road safety interventions that reduce crash risks before they occur.

GreenLight Initiative remains committed to collaborating with government agencies, including the FRSC, civil society organizations, and communities to advance safer roads and prevent avoidable loss of lives across Nigeria.
Road traffic crashes are preventable, and every life lost is one too many.

Signed:

Star Okereh
Manager, GreenLight Initiative.
