PRESS RELEASE: GreenLight Initiative Warns Against Drinking and Driving After Ebute-Ero Crash.

An unidentified driver involved in a grave road traffic accident at Ebute-Ero of Apongbon, Lagos State, has been suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. On their official Twitter page, The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirms this occurrence, stating the incident happened in the early hours of today, January 26th, 2026.

The driver was reportedly driving a Honda Jeep (FKJ 562 JF) at an uncontrollable speed when he crashed into the rear of a moving Sienna truck while descending the bridge. According to LASTMA, the violent impact of the collision left the driver critically trapped within the mangled wreckage of his vehicle, creating an immediate life-threatening emergency.

LASTMA rescue personnel were promptly mobilised to the accident scene to carry out the emergency extraction of the trapped driver, who was rescued and transported to the nearest medical facility.

GreenLight Initiative acknowledges LASTMA’s swift response, cautions road users against the dangers of drunk driving, and urges regulatory bodies and stakeholders to:

● Support ignition interlock mandates for all Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenders. These devices prevent the car from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver’s breath.

● Support laws that enforce “zero tolerance,” maintain a minimum legal drinking age of 21, and allow license suspension for DUI offenders.

● Consider behavioral therapy, such as counseling or support groups, to help manage stress and potential triggers that can lead to drinking and driving.

GreenLight Initiative identifies drinking and driving as one of the major causes of road traffic crashes and urges road users, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to join hands in eradicating triggers that could lead to driving under the influence.
