Press Release: Urgent Call for Road Safety Reforms Following Tragic Tanker Explosion in Jigawa State

October 17, 2024

We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and communities affected by the recent devastating tanker explosion in Jigawa State, which has tragically claimed the lives of over 150 people. In September 9, similar incident occurred in Niger State leading to the loss of 56 lives. These horrifying incidents are a stark reminder of the urgent need to prioritize road safety and strengthen our post-crash response systems across Nigeria.

According to the recent global status report on road safety released in December 2023 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the estimated annual fatalities in Nigeria is 36,722 ranking as one of the countries with the highest road fatalities globally. These alarming statistics highlight the grave risks that road users face daily and the inadequacies in our current safety measures and emergency response protocols.

As the world prepares to mark the UN World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 17, 2024, it is imperative for the Nigerian government to take immediate, comprehensive action to prevent such tragedies from recurring. We call on the government to:

  1. Enhance Road Safety Regulations: Stricter enforcement of road regulations leveraging technology, especially for heavy-duty vehicles, and mandatory safety checks must be prioritized.
  2. Improve Emergency Response Systems: Equipping first responders with the necessary tools, training, and resources to handle road traffic emergencies effectively is crucial.
  3. Educate Road Users: Public awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate drivers and communities on the dangers of reckless driving, speeding, and the proper response in case of an emergency.

As we mourn the loss of innocent lives, we must also take this moment to press for urgent reforms that will save lives on our roads. Every death on the road is one too many.
