GreenLight Initiative Implements Project to Empower Women for Safe and Inclusive Mobility in Abuja, Led by Star Okereh
GreenLight Initiative, with support from the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety, is implementing the transformative project “Empowering Women for Safe and Inclusive Mobility” in Abuja, Nigeria, led by Star Okereh, a dedicated advocate for safer roads and gender equality.
This six-month project aims to address the pressing issue of gender-specific challenges faced by women in road safety, particularly in Abuja. Reports have highlighted alarming rates of harassment, inequality in transport system usage, and overall poor safety and security on the road for women in the region.
The project seeks to educate and empower young women aged 18-35 on road safety while advocating for gender-inclusive transport policies and anti-harassment measures.
“We believe that by empowering women with the necessary knowledge and skills, and advocating for policy changes, we can create a safer and more inclusive road environment for all,” said Star Okereh, the project leader.
By adopting a multi-dimensional approach, including awareness campaigns, advocacy for policy changes, and capacity building for young women as agents of change, the project aims to achieve significant milestones.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities)—this initiative aims to create resilient communities and foster sustainable development.
With the combined efforts of GreenLight Initiative and its partners, this project is set to make a lasting impact on road safety and women’s empowerment in Abuja.
“I am excited to lead this initiative with GreenLight Initiative and other stakeholders to make our roads safer and empower women in Abuja,” added Star Okereh.
