Tanker Explosion on Abuja-Keffi Expressway Claims Lives and Destroys Vehicles

GreenLight Initiative expresses deep sorrow over the devastating fire incident that occurred on the evening of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway near Karu Bridge. The tragic accident, involving a Dangote cement trailer that lost control while approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, resulted in a catastrophic explosion that claimed the lives of at least six people and destroyed 14 vehicles.
According to reports from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, the inferno caused severe destruction, leading to heavy traffic congestion as emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), fire service personnel, and security agencies, worked tirelessly to contain the situation.
“This heartbreaking incident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures, particularly in the regulation and monitoring of heavy-duty vehicles on major expressways,” said Star Okereh, Country Manager, Nigeria, GreenLight Initiative. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and urge the government to take proactive steps to prevent such tragedies.”
