PRESS RELEASE – Mabushi Tragedy: GreenLight Initiative Demands End to Road Harassment and Lawlessness
Four lives lost, children orphaned — NGO urges FCTA, AMAC, Police, and FRSC to act decisively to protect citizens.
GreenLight Initiative expresses profound grief over the recent tragic incident in Mabushi, Abuja, where a couple and their two children lost their lives in a violent altercation involving members of an unlawful task force. This devastating event has left four young boys orphaned, and underscores the urgent need to address the unchecked harassment of motorists and traders across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident, which also saw two of the alleged perpetrators lynched by an angry mob, is a reminder of the dangers of lawlessness on our roads and within our communities. It reflects systemic failures in enforcement, regulation, and accountability that continue to put the lives of ordinary Nigerians at risk.
GreenLight Initiative strongly condemns the presence and operations of unauthorized task forces or groups that exploit, intimidate, and endanger citizens under the guise of law enforcement. We call on the FCT Administration, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant agencies to urgently:
1. Disband unlawful task forces and groups operating within Abuja and other parts of Nigeria.
2. Strengthen regulation and monitoring of recognized enforcement teams to ensure professionalism and accountability.
3. Enhance protection for motorists and traders, including women, children, and other vulnerable groups who are most at risk.
4. Ensure justice for the victims of this tragedy, while supporting their surviving children and families.
This tragedy should never have happened. It is both a wake-up call and a demand for decisive action to prevent such avoidable loss of lives in the future. Citizens deserve to move freely and safely without fear of harassment, extortion, or violence.
GreenLight Initiative stands ready to collaborate with government agencies, civil society partners, and the media to push for safer, more accountable, and humane practices in road and community governance.
