The National Finals of the 2025 VIA Programme for Safe Mobility took place at Eko Tower 2, Victoria Island, Lagos, bringing together students from Lagos, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to present innovative, youth-led solutions for safer school mobility.

After a series of inspiring performances and creative presentations, Government Secondary School, Orozo (FCT) emerged as the National Champion, while Government Girls Secondary School Orominieke (Rivers state) and Army Day Secondary School, Asokoro (FCT) came second and third respectively.

The VIA Programme, launched in Nigeria in May 2025 by TotalEnergies Nigeria in collaboration with NNPC, supported by the TotalEnergies Foundation, and implemented by GreenLight Initiative, is a global road safety education programme designed to empower young people to become advocates for safer roads and inclusive mobility.

Over the past months, 30 public secondary schools and 600 students across Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT participated in the programme, engaging in classroom learning, risk-mapping walks, and creative advocacy projects. These activities culminated in state-level competitions earlier in the year, producing nine finalists who showcased their projects at the National Finals.

At the event, students creatively addressed critical issues such as pedestrian safety, speeding, safe school zones, and community awareness through artistic posters, poetry, drama, songs, and news presentations. Their work demonstrated not only deep understanding but also actionable solutions to real risks identified around their school communities.

As Nigeria’s VIA National Champion, Government Secondary School, Orozo will now represent the country at the Regional Finals starting on November 25, 2025, and compete alongside students from Madagascar, Morocco, and Malawi. Successful schools from each region will advance to the International VIA Finals on December 2, 2025, where they will present their projects before experts and global stakeholders in Paris, France.

The VIA Programme in Nigeria continues to promote road safety education through collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), State Ministries of Education, and public schools, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 4, 11, and 17) on good health, quality education, and sustainable cities.

By investing in road safety education and empowering young people, the VIA Programme is helping shape a generation of responsible road users and community advocates for safer, more sustainable mobility in Nigeria.
