PRESS RELEASE: Students Showcase Creative Road Safety Solutions at FCT VIA Programme Competition
Abuja, Nigeria – Ten public secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory came together to showcase their creativity, knowledge, and recommendations during the FCT State Competition of the 2025 VIA Programme for Safe Mobility. The event was held at TotalEnergies House 2, Herbert Macaulay Way, Central Business District, Abuja.
The competition marks a key milestone in the VIA Programme for Safe Mobility in Nigeria, a youth-centered road safety education initiative launched by TotalEnergies in collaboration with NNPC, supported by the TotalEnergies Foundation, and implemented by GreenLight Initiative, a non-profit organization promoting road safety and sustainable development.
During the event, students presented innovative road safety recommendations drawn from their real-life experiences during school-based risk mapping exercises. Their ideas were expressed through artistic posters, poetry, drama, and presentations addressing key mobility risks and solutions.
Government Secondary School Orozo emerged as the overall winner, followed by Government Secondary School Asokoro in second place and Government Secondary School Jiwa in third. Their presentations impressed judges with a combination of real data, poetry, powerful storytelling, and actionable solutions for their school communities.
The VIA Programme in Nigeria involves collaboration among public secondary schools, the State Ministries of Education, and key stakeholders such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Its objectives include raising awareness about road safety risks, promoting youth-led solutions, and reducing road traffic injuries and fatalities, especially among school children.
The VIA Programme, currently running in Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT, directly engages 600 students across 30 government schools. It aims to promote safer journeys to and from school by empowering students—known as VIA Ambassadors—to lead peer education, identify hazards, and advocate for change.
The FCT event was the final in a series of three state-level competitions. Winners from Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT will now proceed to the National Finals, where one school will be selected to represent Nigeria at the International VIA Finals in France later this year.
Through education, creativity, and leadership, the VIA Programme continues to build a generation of young Nigerians equipped to champion road safety and inspire lasting change in their communities.
